Russian Geological Library hosts an exhibition dedicated to Kanysh Satpayev

Kanysh Satpayev (1899-1964) was an outstanding Kazakh scientist, geologist, public personality, the first President of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Geology and Mineralogy, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. He was the founder of the Kazakh School of Metallogeny.

His rich scientific heritage includes studies of Zhezkazgan ores, papers on metallogeny of Sary Arka and the compilation of predictive maps. Having studied the mineral-rich environment of Sary Arka, Altai, Karaganda, Kara Tau, Kanysh Satpayev made important scientific conclusions about stratigraphy, tectonics, structure, metallogeny, geochemistry and origin of ores in these areas; he introduced into science the integrated method of metallogenic analysis. A number of new ferrous, non-ferrous and rare metal deposits were discovered in Sary Arka due to the introduction of these methods.

For his breakthrough in the development of Kazakhstan's natural resources, Kanysh Satpaev was awarded the Order of Lenin. At the beginning of the Second World War, the USSR had an acute shortage of manganese. So the scientist put forward a proposal to develop the manganese deposits that had been discovered in the area of the Dzhezdy River. The mine was built in 40 days, and by June 1942 the Ural factories were working with the extracted crude minerals. The team was awarded the Stalin Prize. In the years that followed, Satpayev became famous as a leading organiser of science in Kazakhstan.

His name was given to the Award for Natural Science of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, streets and schools in many cities of Kazakhstan, aul in Bayanaul District of Pavlodar Region, small planet 2402 discovered by astronomer N.S. Chernykh, mineral satpaevite discovered in vanadium deposits, Satpayev Glacier on the northern slope of the Dzungarian Alatau Range, the source of the Lepsy River. In 1999 a monument to K.I. Satpayev was erected in Almaty near the Kazakh National Research Technical University on the corner of Satpayev and Baitursynov Streets
