Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee
The Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee (ISC) of Russia was established in 1955 (Order of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Wealth Conservation of the USSR No. 472 dated June 2, 1955, Resolution of the Bureau of the Department forGeological and Geographical Sciences, Academy of Sciences of the USSR) to address general methodological and regulatory issues of stratigraphy and coordination of stratigraphic studies in the USSR. The organization of the activities of the ISC was entrusted to the All-Union Geological Research Institute (now A.P. Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI)). The ISC activities has been organized at VSEGEI in a specially established structural unit – the ISC sector.

ISC chairmen: Academician D.V. Nalivkin (1955-1976), Academician B.S. Sokolov (1976-1988) and corresponding member A.I. Zhamoida (1988-2021), who supervised the work of the Committee for more than 35 years.
Since September 2021, Academician Aleksey Rozanov (Paleontological Institute, RAS) has been the Chairman of the ISC.
The Interdepartmental Stratigraphic Committee (ISC) of Russia in accordance with the Regulations on ISC activities (Order of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation No. 145 dated June 1, 2000), is responsible for expert, scientific and methodological activities related to complex issues of stratigraphic breakdown and correlation, updates regulatory stratigraphic documents (Stratigraphic Code of Russia, Resolutions of the ISC and its permanent commissions), considers and approves regional stratigraphic maps, holds stratigraphic meetings.
In 2019, the ISC was included in the List of Councils, Committees and Commissions at RAS Branches (Resolution of the RAS Presidium dated January 22, 2019). Members of the ISC (Bureau and Committee) and the chairs of the commissions were agreed upon by the Bureau of the Department of Earth science, RAS (Resolution No. 13000/1-2 of February 19, 2019).
The ISC includes thirteen commissions for systems, three subject commissions (for regional stratigraphic maps, for Phanerozoic seismic stratigraphy of offshore areas of Russia, for magnetostratigraphy), and seven regional interdepartmental stratigraphic commissions (RISC) (North-Western RISC, Central RISC, North Caucasian RISC, Crimean RISC, Ural RISC, Siberian RISC, Far Eastern RISC, RISC for the North-East of Russia and the Koryak-Kamchatka region).
