On March 18, 2021, a meeting of the Executive Bureau of the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) was held as a video conference. The meeting was attended by members of the CGMW Bureau, vice presidents and presidents of regional and thematic subcommissions (14 participants).
The President of the Commission, M. Pubellie, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech and said that the current meeting was devoted to the interim results of the Commission's work on key projects and discussion of results of the joint work of CGMW and the international Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) Program, in particular, the project on compiling the 1:5M Geological Map of the World. The Russian side was represented by RAS Corresponding Member Dr. Oleg Petrov, FGBU VSEGEI Director General, Vice-President of the Subcommission for Northern Eurasia, and Tatiana Tolmacheva, Secretary General of the Subcommission for Northern Eurasia.
Short presentations were made by J. Gómez Tapias, Vice President of the Subcommission for South America, who said that the Third Edition of the 1:5 M Geological Map of South America had been electronically posted on the CGMW website and was expected to be printed; N. Ellouz-Zimmermann, Secretary General of the Subcommission for the Seafloor, announcing the readiness of a booklet containing a set of maps for the Caribbean region. K. Asch, Vice-President of the Subcommission for Europe, briefed the Bureau on the progress in compiling the International Quaternary Map of Europe (IQUAME), and fruitful cooperation with the Subcommission for the Middle East in obtaining a large amount of Quaternary data.
C. François, CGMW Secretary, made a presentation on the progress of the IGCP 667 Project: World Map of the Orogens. In 2021, the first stage of the project ends - the compilation of maps of Eastern and Northern Eurasia, map of South America and Europe. Materials will be sent for testing to relevant regional subcommittees.
Dr. Oleg Petrov, Vice-President of the Subcommission for Northern Eurasia, in his brief presentation gave an account on the progress on the 1:35 M Tectonic Map of the World, the base layers of which, such as the sedimentary cover thickness, the crust thickness, the map of magnetic and gravimetric anomalies, recent seismic activity, in the near future would be posted on a special section of the VSEGEI site. Dr. Oleg Petrov also informed the Commission about upgrading the 1:2.5 M Geological Map of Russia and Adjacent Water Areas, which has been compiled and upgraded at VSEGEI in digital format for more than 15 years.
The Bureau meeting was mainly focused on the progress of the DDE Geological Mapping Group under the supervision of CGMW as well as the coordination between the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) and the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), the correlation of legends for base geological maps of continents, creation of the GIS database, map of the world seafloor, starting with the Pacific Ocean, with seafloor age grids, hydrothermal vents, oceanic spreading centers, and major transformations.
Also presented was the StratTime Intelligent Stratigraphic Converter software, prepared by CGMW technicians to work on the 1:5M Geological Map of the World.
