Nikolay Grigorievich Kassin. 1885-1949

Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (1946). Expert in the field of geology.
In 1904, he entered the St. Petersburg Mining Institute.
Since 1917, he worked in the Geological Committee.
He conducted geological investigations in the Donbass (1911-1924), in Southeast Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and on the Kola Peninsula. He taught at the Leningrad Mining Institute and the Leningrad Institute of Railway Engineers (1918-1926). He was the pioneer of many minerals in Kazakhstan. In 1941, under the leadership of N.G. Kassin was prepared the 20th volume of "Geology of the USSR", dedicated to East Kazakhstan. He compiled the “Structural-tectonic map of Kazakhstan” at 1:500 000 scale (1941). In 1941-1949 – Consultant, Senior Researcher, Institute of Geological Sciences, Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. He was one of the organizers of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, the first Academician in regional and historical geology (1946).
Awards:
- N.M. Przhevalsky grand gold medal for a monograph on the geology of the former Vyatka province (1930).
- Stalin Prize for leading the preparation of the 20th volume of “Geology of the USSR” (East Kazakhstan) and “Materials on the palaeography of Kazakhstan” (1946).
- He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and a medal.
- His name is given to the beds in the Lower Carboniferous of Central Kazakhstan (1937), two minerals from the classes of silicates and hydroxides, and five fossil forms from the classes of trilobites and ostracods.
