Ivan Ivanovich Gorsky. 1893-1975

Ivan Ivanovich Gorsky, a famous geologist, palaeontologist, specialist in the field of coal geology. Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Employee of GeolCom since 1918. VSEGEI Director (1944-1947).
He conducted research in the geology of coal-bearing regions in the Urals and Kazakhstan, stratigraphy and tectonics of the Urals, fossil corals of the Urals, Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and the Arctic. He participated in the compilation of the first geological map of the central Urals (1939). During the Great Patriotic War, he supervised the work on coal in the Ural State University. Since 1948, he headed the Coal Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He edited the Atlas of Coal Accumulation Maps in the USSR. Along with pedagogical activities, he conducted palaeontological studies on the Carboniferous and Permian corals, rugoses. The author of the Atlas of the Leading Forms of Fossil Faunas in the USSR. President of the All-Union Palaeontological Society (1954-1975). Awarded A.P. Karpinsky Gold Medal of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
